New York City-based psychedelic dreampop band MALKA present their debut EP, The Constant State. Recorded at both APT Studio (NYC) and Elohino studio (NJ), mixed by Darko Saric, and mastered at 825 Studios by Grammy Award-winning engineer Butch Jones (Madonna, Talking Heads, Iggy Pop, The Gun Club, B-52s), The Constant State takes listeners on a genre-melding journey, ebbing and flowing through the realms of dreampop, post-rock, nugaze, and psychedelic rock.
And this is an excellent album which demonstrates a range of styles without being constrained by any one in particular. This gives Malka a great sound which is sometimes dreamy and ethereal, other times more uptempo with an edge. Each song is extremely well produced – the drumming and bass are excellent providing a solid base on which the songs are built; the guitar playing is excellent too ranging from jangly acoustic sounds to distorted with great riffing and solos; the vocals are excellent too often having a dreamy / ethereal feel and really good harmonies too.
A Flock of Crows A great opening synth sound and driving drumming is joined by a great edgy guitar sound playing a distorted riff. The vocals are processed really well and have a laid back vibe with some really nice harmonies. There are great changes in feel through the song too with an uptempo feel to the chorus.
For Now we Live Great natural sounding percussion to open with a brilliant delayed guitar riff and choral synth sound. The song has a great ambience with dreamy qualities leading into more uptempo percussion and upfront sounds. There’s a great change in feel returning to the ambience and vocals. A return to the more uptempo feel is a great build and release of tension.
Mientras Se Respira A really nice acoustic riff to open accompanied by more distorted guitar and some nice harmonies. The song evolves a great vibe with laid back vocals which have a real dreamy quality and a solid groove provided by the drumming and bass. There’s a kind of refrain leading to a great solo and nice release of tension to end the song.
Wolves and Sheep The opening bass gives the song a brooding quality, drumming gives a great momentum and the guitar adds a great feel complimenting the bass. The song has a kind of urgency to it leading to a slightly stripped back version for the vocals building the tension again releasing into another vocal section before a high energy solo to end the song.
Diamond Girl A great groove from bass, drumming and chord vamp with a great lead guitar part. Great dreamy qualities to the vocals again with excellent harmonies again. There’s a great vibe to the song, a great solo too and nice release of tension returning to a solo to end the song.
Corazon Sin Sangre A great evolving opening leading into an excellent riff propelled by solid drumming and bass again. Great vocals again, the verse has a laid back feel and the harmonies a really good ethereal feel. A great vibe to the song.
Swoon This song has a more uptempo feel, a great riff and solid drumming and bass again to propel the song. Great vocals, there’s a momentum and edge of tension to the song which work really well. There’s a really good distorted tone for the chords in the verse which gives a great change of feel.
