ATC announces availability of SCS140iW Pro 2×12” and SCS240iW Pro 2×15” high-output in-wall subwoofers

Introduction

ATC is proud to introduce its SCS140iW Pro and SCS240iW Pro, respectively available as dual-driver versions of its 12”/300mm SCS70iW Pro and 15”/375mm SCS120iW Pro in-wall subwoofers — sealed box designs acting as ideal partners to the loudspeaker manufacturer’s SCM200AiW and SCM300AiW in-wall main monitors (with which the new in-wall subwoofers share their respective cabinet widths), effectively elevating those top-tier offerings through the delivery of exceptional low-frequency extension, expanded dynamic range, and seamless integration for stereo, surround, and immersive formats, including Dolby Atmos.

Overview

The scene having been set, SCS140iW Pro is a new 2×12” design, taking all the best qualities of the proven SCS70iW Pro but enhanced with a pair of 12”/300mm drivers and dual remote amps. As such, this lifts the output of an already dynamic subwoofer by 6dB, resulting, respectively, in a continuous and peak SPL (Sound Pressure Level) capability of 116dB and 121dB (at 1m). Physically, SCS140iW Pro’s cabinet size is relatively compact given that high output capability, with the width matching the SCM200AiW in-wall main monitor for seamless visual integration when used together. This subwoofer can also partner smaller ATC models, or work with any system where an extended bass response and high SPL/headroom is required.

The larger and more powerful SCS240iW Pro is ideally suited to the largest of control rooms and supporting ATC’s SCM300AiW in-wall main monitor as a 2×15” design derived from the SCS120iW Pro in-wall subwoofer. Amplifier and driver count is doubled, resulting in a 6dB increase in continuous and peak output capability — 119dB continuous and 126dB peak (at 1m), to be precise. This time the width of the SCS240iW Pro cabinet matches that of the SCM300AiW in-wall main monitor, forming an awe-inspiring array when coupled together. This subwoofer can also partner smaller ATC models, or work with any system where an extended bass response and very high SPL/headroom is required.

The 12”/300mm and 15”/375mm sub-bass drivers deployed in SCS140iW Pro and SCS240iW Pro, respectively, are both built by ATC — advancing its proven philosophy of developing products from component level upwards — and painstakingly optimised for reproduction of the lowest four octaves of the audio band. Both feature a 30mm magnetic gap that is 50% longer than any other offered by its creator. This long gap and short-coil configuration takes a longstanding ATC design feature to its limit, ensuring magnetic non-linearities are minimised while simultaneously delivering the high excursion required to generate accurate, dynamic low frequency from modest cone area. All driver components — from the drive system to the suspension — have been precisely optimised using the latest analysis tools available at both small and large signal level. The advanced transducer combines a powerful short-coil motor system featuring optimised airflow and cooling with a carbon-paper composite cone, and results in deep, clean bass from 120Hz down to below 20Hz (in SCS240iW Pro’s case) — and all with minimal distortion and maximum impact.

It is fair to say that the SCS140iW Pro and SCS240iW Pro subwoofers share some striking features as sealed box designs, including in-wall-specific cabinets with recessed input panels and full-face square-edge baffles and drivers. Both being partnered with accompanying dual R1-300 Pro remote-mounted 7U/19” amplifiers allows for flexible installation in a suitable wall close to the subwoofer, in a control room rack, or machine room, with connections made via NL4 speaker and 5-pin XLR cables. Connectivity and control includes balanced stereo Inputs, balanced (full-range) Outputs, and analogue 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters with multiple crossover options — including an industry-standard 80Hz setting and bypass setting for external processing — while a Pol. (polarity) switch, variable Phase control, and stepped attenuator allow for precise system tuning. The 300W Class A-B amplifiers are hand-built and optimised for fast, dynamic response and also feature convenient mute control via footswitch, with daisy-chain capability for multiple subs.

ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company) was founded in London in 1974 by Australian émigré Billy Woodman. As an enthusiastic pianist and engineer, he was naturally drawn to loudspeaker design. After a period of working at Goodmans, where many of the names that went on to found British loudspeaker companies began their careers, he struck out on his own. On the face of it, the premise on which his company began is a simple one — one that, in many respects, still holds true today: hi-fi loudspeakers tend to be detailed and accurate but of limited range, while professional monitor speakers tend to express the opposite character. Clearly bucking the trend, the company’s products were designed from the outset to offer the best of both. It is an easy concept to describe, but surprisingly difficult to engineer. After all, the difficulty in designing such loudspeakers is one of scale — hi-fi levels of detail and accuracy call for lightweight moving parts and delicate engineering, while professional monitor levels of performance demand far more robust components engineered to survive the rigours of high-level use for extended periods. Put it like this: the only way to combine the two is through precision engineering of a class and scale more often associated with aerospace or motor sport, but the results are worth the effort and the cost — as ably demonstrated by all ATC loudspeakers with their unique in-house-designed drivers, combining the best of hi-fi and professional to devastating effect. Emerging from modest beginnings, the company has grown to become one of the very few manufacturers that is successful across both domestic and professional audio.
