Review of The Spider Room EP by Joseph Blane on Submarine Broadcasting Company

A brilliant concept for an album, Joseph entered a derelict school building late at night to record improvised guitar on a cheap recorder. He found a number of old, broken, spider ridden and out of tune instruments which he subsequently overdubbed onto the guitar tracks as improvised performances.

The album comprises of two tracks, both around 15 minutes long. It is entirely improvised, was recorded in one take and is largely unedited.

It’s very engaging, you can picture the room as you listen. It’s very difficult to describe – it’s abstract, sort of ambient, sort of jazzy, sort of neo-classical. It has a strange beauty, a haunted sound at times and a great edge.

Part I / Beneath The Dust

Atmospheric and edgy opening from scraped strings and toy piano sound, the song builds with layered melody and dissonance.  It’s sometimes abstract, sometimes more coherent whilst building and releasing tension.  THere’s a dark edge to the song.

Part II / Above The Dust

A rhythmic start to the opening, the song has an ambient jazzy vibe, similarly building layered melody with just a hint of dissonance with a final crescendo of noise to end. It’s much less dark than part one.
